STAGE and BEYOND
Friday July 26, 2024 10:00am - 11:00am EDT
STAGE and BEYOND is an open discussion about the MANY lanes of creative success available to stage actors, singers, and dancers who are aspiring professionals. "Success" doesn't have to be confined to performing onstage — how can we find ways to EXPAND opportunities available to performers while using our performance experience to open more doors?

When stage performers can tap into the mindset of EXPANSION rather than TRANSITION... it allows us to start manifesting those endeavors WHILE having successful performing careers and unlocking those "entrepreneurial" gates of creative potential.

Join Mike Evariste, alongside a panel of today's top industry and Broadway professionals who have taken their skills to STAGE and BEYOND!

Our goal is to keep talking about audio description until the response is – that’s the accessibility service that allows blind and visually impaired patrons to enjoy theatre. We will also share feedback that we’ve heard from blind and low vision theatre goers from our combined experiences with audio description. We will answer any questions that workshop attendees have from how to become a describer, to how to start a description program or how to increase participation from AD users at your theatre.

Tin Pan Alley: Gateway to the American Musical on Broadway
Saturday July 27, 2024 1:15pm - 2:15pm EDT
During the two decades when Tin Pan Alley flourished on 28th Street in New York (approx. 1890-1910), a symbiotic relationship was established between the commercial theatre – musical comedies in particular – and the emerging commercial sheet music industry: each benefitted and grew from helping to popularize the other. Contributions by Jewish and African American sheet music publishers as well as the entrepreneurial roles taken by women in this era directly shaped the American musical. This panel discussion will show how these entrepreneurs set the musical's development in motion to create the first golden age of musical theatre, 1924-1940.

The Audio Describer As Cast Member: Live Audio Description At Every Performance
Sunday July 28, 2024 1:15pm - 2:15pm EDT
The current practice of offering audio description at one or two performances in the run of a show was established over 40 years ago; it has never represented equity for audience members who are blind or have vision loss. Our assertion is that access is not simply an add-on; it can be practiced by professionals who are as committed to the success of every performance as each formal cast member. A more expansive audio description arrangement could have an audio describer at rehearsals for each production, meeting with the stage director, actors, the designers (scenic, costumes, lighting, sound) and developing an audio description script throughout the rehearsal period.

Teaming up with 2x Super Bowl winner and former NY Giant Leonard Marshall, they bring untold stories to the mainstream, highlighting narratives absent from history books. This session aims to illuminate figures like Dr. Emma Wakefield, 9/11 victims, 2nd Lt. Edward Loustalot, and the whole history of slavery.
